Petrie was a political science major at LVC, during his time at The Valley he played for the basketball team. He served as captain of the team twice and led the team to the MAC Championship during his junior year. After graduation he had the opportunity for a free agent tryout with the Chicago Bulls. He started coaching at Haverford High School in 1972 as an assistant basketball coach for a year before attending the University of Utah to earn his master’s degree. After his time in Utah, Petrie went to Bucknell University as an assistant coach and helped establish a winning tradition. This led him to becoming a head coach at Gettysburg College for their men’s basketball and men’s golf teams. He coached basketball at Gettysburg for twenty-nine years.
