A member of LVC's men's basketball's 1,000-point club, Daryl Hess earned the team MVP award in the 1989–90 season, a campaign in which the Dutchmen captured the ECAC Championship. In 1989, Hess was awarded LVC's Chuck Maston Award, an honor given annually to a male member of a varsity team who displays the exceptional qualities of sportsmanship, leadership, cooperation, and spirit, and the Merle L. Wise '53 Memorial Fund Award. In 1990, the Central Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame honored Hess with its Senior Collegiate Athlete Award. After graduating, Hess became an assistant coach for two seasons, including during LVC's memorable NCAA Division III National Championship in 1994. Hess also played baseball for the Dutchmen and was a two-year captain. In 1989, he was team MVP, an ECAC DIII Southern Region All-Star (pitcher), and a Middle Atlantic Conference First Team selection.
