Commonwealth Conference Tournament
Alvernia 10, Lebanon Valley
Photo GalleryYORK, Pa. - Lebanon Valley bowed out in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament with a 10-1 elimination-game loss to Alvernia Friday at Santander Stadium.
The Dutchmen end the season at 20-19; Alvernia (26-12) advances in the loser's bracket to face the loser of the Messiah/Widener winner's bracket game later on Friday.
Jason Barthold (2-4) had a strong start but things unravelled for LVC with Alvernia's four-run fourth and a three-error fifth that let them swing a 2-1 battle into a comfortable 9-1 lead.
Mike Weinhold (6-1) had an outstanding start for the Crusaders, scattering six hits and striking out 11 in the complete-game effort.
Zach Nadolny doubled in a run in the first, but after failing to capitalize on early chances, the Dutchmen tied it on
Eric Leymeister's single to plate
Tim Filer following his double high off the wall in left.
In the fourth, Alvernia loaded the bases with no outs, and after a sac fly retook the lead and LVC got the second out at the plate, Barthold departed for
Corey Sell. A wild pitch let Santino Alteri score on a close play at the plate, and Nadolny singled in two more runs for a 5-1 lead.
All four Alvernia runs came in unearned in the fifth to lead 9-1, and the Crusaders tacked on another run in the seventh on Cameron Coons' pinch-hit single.
Zach Smith had a two-hit day, and Filer, Leymeister,
Mike Specht, and
Corey Cinicola had the others for LVC. Nadolny's four-RBI, 4-for-5 day led Alvernia. LVC combined six pitchers, with
Mike Wakalowski,
Patrick Reagan,
Jimmie Miller, and
Brent McDowell throwing the balance of the game, with Miller and McDowell pitching a perfect ninth.
