CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Spencer Butz hit a triple and scored a run for the Lebanon Valley College baseball team, as the program dropped an 11-1 decision to DeSales University on Friday, April 24, at Weiland Park.
Daniel Palmieri also drove in a run for LVC with an RBI single.
The Dutchmen (15-22, 9-10 MAC Freedom) got a runner into scoring in the top of the first inning, as
Lucien Burger drove a two-out double to center field. The Bulldogs (26-11, 16-3 MAC Freedom) then opened the scoring in the bottom half of the first, taking a 2-0 lead on an RBI double and an RBI single. Lebanon Valley also generated some traffic on the bases in the top of the second, as
John Teehan hit a two-out single to center field and stole second base. Starting pitcher
Landon Sexton followed this with a 1-2-3 bottom of the second for the Flying Dutchmen, registering a flyout and a lineout to Butz in center field and a flyout to Burger in left field.
Sexton also retired DeSales in order in the bottom of the third inning, logging a flyout to right fielder
Kenny Palmieri, a lineout to Burger in left field, and a groundout to Teehan at second base. Lebanon Valley then put a run on the board in the top of the fourth, narrowing the score to 2-1. Butz got things started by hitting a triple down the right-field line, and the senior promptly crossed the plate on
Daniel Palmieri's bunt single back to the pitcher. The Bulldogs countered with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking a 3-1 advantage on a solo home run.
Trey Dianna entered the game to pitch for the Dutchmen in the bottom of the fifth inning and notched the final out of a scoreless frame. DeSales had runners on the corners with two outs, and LVC got out of the frame unscathed with a flyout to
Kenny Palmieri in right field. The Bulldogs later added on a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, going up 5-1 on an RBI triple and an RBI single.
Lebanon Valley continued to compete at the plate in the top of the seventh inning, as
Kenny Palmieri lined a one-out single to left field. DeSales then hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, taking a 6-1 lead. The Bulldogs later tacked on five runs in the bottom of the eighth, going ahead 11-1 during an inning that included an RBI single, a two-run single, and a play where two runs scored on a single and an error. The Flying Dutchmen proceeded to battle until the final out, as
Luca Santoro was hit by a pitch with one out and stole second base. Ultimately, the score was maintained through the end of the contest.
