Lebanon Valley 9, Arcadia 2
PHILADELPHIA - Michael Houseal pitched a complete-game four-hitter to lead Lebanon Valley past Arcadia, 9-2, in the opener of their Commonwealth Conference series.
The Dutchmen (18-11, 9-7 CC) recorded 11 hits led Zac Edwards and Tim Filer's two-RBI performances. The Knights (5-21-1, 3-13 CC) were held in check as Houseal carried a no-hitter into the sixth.
Houseal improved to 4-2 with a seven-strikeout performance, throwing 122 pitches in the win. He gave up just one earned run.
Arcadia led early, scoring an unearned run in the first when Tom Wagner came across on an error. LVC took the lead in the second with Brett Fundell doubling and later scoring on an error, and Edwards driving in Cory Cinicola with a single down the line.
The Dutchmen tacked on three more in the fifth with Zach Smith leading off with a walk, and two consecutive errors extending the inning to led Devin Dellinger and Mike Specht drive in runs and lead 5-1.
George Pagan's grounder in the bottom of the fifth cut LVC's lead to 5-2, but a two-run single by Filer in the sixth made it 7-2, and insurance runs came in the eighth on Edwards' sac fly to score Brandon Popp and the ninth on Fundell's single to plate Dellinger from second.
LVC worked deep counts on Knights starter Joe Warren (1-2), causing him to depart after the fifth with six runs allowed, and their relief combo of Rob Worrell and Kyle Farnholtz gave up three more over the balance.
The two teams will meet in a Good Friday doubleheader at noon at McGill Field to close out the series with LVC chasing a possible postseason berth. An LVC sweep, combined with two losses by Elizabethtown and Albright, could clinch a spot on Friday.
