ANNVILLE, Pa. -
Austin Hornberger and
Lee Webber combined to three-hit Ursinus as Lebanon Valley opened their home schedule with a 5-2 win over Ursinus at McGill Field.
The Dutchmen (7-5) received a pair of RBI hits from
Devin Dellinger and
Mike Specht's first career home run to highlight the offense on a blustery day in Annville. Ursinus (4-5) recorded all three hits and both runs in the first as Hornberger (2-2) did not allow a hit over his next seven innings, with Webber picking up his second save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Ursinus turned in a big first inning with a one-out rally to take an early 2-0 lead. With runners on second and third, Ralph Aurora doubled to center to score both runs, but Hornberger worked out of the inning to leave Aurora on third after his strikeout of Devyn Kerr.
Tim Filer cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame, scoring
Zach Smith with a single, and Specht's solo shot to deep right field tied the game in the bottom of the second. The game stayed 2-2 until the fifth, when Dellinger doubled in Smith from first, and he drove in
Zac Edwards two innings later with a two-out single to lead 4-2.
Corey Cinicola's double in the eighth brough in Kory Johnson for an insurance run.
Meanwhile, after the first inning, Hornberger dominated the Bears, allowing just one baserunner between the second and sixth innings on a hit batter. He worked out of a jam in the sixth after hitting Aurora, who stole second and advanced to third on an error; Hornberger rung up Kerr again to end that threat, then never got in serious trouble again in eight innings of work.
Webber threw a perfect ninth, inducing a ground-out and fly-out before getting Greg Petorak looking to end the game. Ursinus starter Alex Manacher (1-1) lasted 6.2 innings and was responsible for four LVC runs, three earned; William DiCurcio and Steve Berardi split the relief.
Specht led LVC with a 3-for-4 day, while Dellinger was 2-for-3 with a walk and his two RBI. Filer and
Jordan Higgins also recorded multi-hit games.
The game was the start of a busy weekend for Lebanon Valley, who will open a Commonwealth Conference series at Albright Friday before coming back to McGill Field for the return doubleheader Saturday. LVC will then host Penn State Schuylkill Sunday for a non-league twinbill.
