Elizabethtown 7, Lebanon Valley 6
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Lebanon Valley couldn't chip away at a one-run Elizabethtown lead as the Blue Jays took their series opener, 7-6, on Friday.
Tim Filer had a 3-for-5, three-RBI day, and
Phill Dohner also went 3-for-5.
Austin Hornberger was hit for seven runs through 3.1 innings, while
Lee Webber pitched 4.2 innings of two-hit ball in relief as LVC's offense tried to climb back from a 7-4 deficit.
The Dutchmen (11-24, 4-15 CC) started the day with Filer's RBI single to bring in
Derek Brousseau, but E-town (16-21, 9-10 CC) equaled them in the bottom of the first when Aaron Rahn knocked in Tyler Weary.
LVC broke through in the second, taking advantage of a Blue Jays error to score three on singles by Dohner and Filer. Things came unraveled for Hornberger in the third with the hosts manufacturing five runs off five hits, capped by Brian Verdelli's two-run single to end the rally. The Jays' Kyle Gable tacked on another run in the fourth that would hold up as the difference, singling in Weary.
Lebanon Valley chipped away at the lead, cutting it to 7-5 in the fifth on
Andrew DeCew's single to score Dohner, and making it a one-run game in the sixth when
Brett Fundell scored on a two-out error. That would be as close as LVC could get, however, as Rob Cressman pitched 3.1 innings of one-hit ball to pick up the save for starter Jake Hoffstein. Filer had the only hit off Cressman to lead off the ninth, but pinch-runner
Korey Johnson was left stranded on second after being sacrificed over by
Dylan Tamecki.
LVC and Elizabethtown will wrap up the season Saturday with a Senior Day doubleheader at McGill Field.
