CHELTENHAM, Pa. - A strong start by
Austin Hornberger in the opener carried Lebanon Valley to a doubleheader split with Arcadia on Saturday.
LVC took game one 5-1 before falling 8-2 in the nightcap to open the series, which will conclude Sunday at McGill Field.
Derek Brousseau led LVC's offense with three runs batted in on the afternoon.
Hornberger struck out six in a complete-game effort in game one as LVC led from the first inning.
Andrew DeCew reached on an error in the opening frame, allowed
Phill Dohner to score unearned; the Dutchmen would carry that lead until the sixth, when they tacked on four runs that would prove decisive.
Corey Cinicola drove in two runs to start the rally, and Brousseau's two-run double to center brought in two more to set the lead at 5-0.
Arcadia scored a lone run in the seventh on Eliott Freeman's single. Jason Goldberg allowed three earned in the complete-game loss for the Knights (18-13-1).
In game two, LVC starter
Jimmie Miller departed after the first inning, and a combination of
Lee Webber,
Brent McDowell, and
Patrick Reagan had to work the rest of the game as Arcadia's bats awoke. The Knights put a run on the board in the fourth, but it was Freeman's three-run home run in the fifth that broke the game open. Three more scored in the sixth, and the Dutchmen avoided the shutout on Brousseau's two-run single in the seventh.
Dave Behler held Lebanon Valley to six hits and one earned run while striking out six to earn the win.
