Alvernia 4, Lebanon Valley 3
READING, Pa. - Matt Patterson's walk-off double dashed Lebanon Valley's comeback hopes for extra innings as Alvernia swept the weekend series with a 4-3 win on Sunday.
The Dutchmen (9-19, 3-12 CC) tied the game in the eighth on
Jordan Higgins' pinch-hit RBI double, but the Crusaders (22-8, 12-3 CC) had the top of their order up in the ninth and worked a one-out rally to win. Alvernia won the three-game series by just a combined four runs.
Phill Dohner went six innings in the start, allowing three runs with four strikeouts;
Corey Cinicola threw 2.1 innings of relief and was charged with the loss and the final run after
Lee Webber came on for the final batter. Crusaders' closer Kevin Becker-Menditto, who saved both games Saturday, earned the win with 1.2 innings of one-hit relief after starter Steve Price lasted 6.2 innings and a string of situational relievers were ineffective.
Alvernia put two across in the third to start things off thanks to Brok Turner's two-run double, and Chris Ray's RBI single in the fourth brought Leon Stimpson across for the second of his three runs scored. LVC scored a run in the fourth as well when
Dylan Tamecki took advantage of the centerfielder's error following
Andrew DeCew's single.
LVC again used an error to score in the seventh as
Mike Specht tripled and then scored on a throwing error; the tying run came in the eighth thanks to Higgin's double to score
Tim Filer. In the ninth, Stimpson led off for Alvernia with a single, and Ray successfully executed the sacrifice to move him over. After Turner was walked, LVC switched to Webber, and Patterson hit a double to center, plating Stimpson and walking off with the win.
The Dutchmen will visit Delaware Valley Tuesday.
