Lebanon Valley 6, Wilkes 3
ANNVILLE, Pa. - Colt Zarilla went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Lebanon Valley's attack on Wilkes in a 6-3 win Tuesday.
Derek Brousseau made a spectacular diving catch to stop an extra-base hit to the left-center gap in the top of the first. It was the first in a string of strong defensive plays that kept the scoreboard blank through three innings.
The Dutchmen (12-13) scored first in the bottom of the fourth when
Aaron Mills doubled to right-center to knock in
Ryan Schwartz and Brousseau.
LVC extended its lead to five runs with a three-run sixth inning. Schwartz led off with a walk and advanced on a wild pitch. He scored on an RBI triple to right-center by Brousseau. Both Brousseau and
Jacob Rhody scored on a two-run single to the right-center gap by Zarilla.
Jason Barthold made the start for LVC and did not allow a run through three innings of work. The win eventually went to
Jimmie Miller (2-2) who pitched the next four innings. Miller allowed five hits but also held the Colonels scoreless.
Wilkes (9-15) finally saw offensive success against reliever
Mike Specht in the top of the eighth. Specht allowed three runs on four hits and a walk in 0.1 innings pitched.
Rhody smashed a one-out double to right-center in the bottom of the eighth and scored on a single by Zarilla to give the Dutchmen additional breathing room heading into the final inning.
Lee Webber came on to earn the save, pitching a scoreless ninth. He created some nervous tension by allowing back-to-back hits, but nailed the game shut with a strikeout and a groundout. The save was his third of the season.
Tuesday's win snapped a four-game losing streak dating back to a loss at Arcadia on March 30.
