Lebanon Valley 2, Albright 1
Lebanon Valley 12, Albright 3
ANNVILLE, Pa. - Lebanon Valley completed a home-and-home sweep over Albright with 2-1 and 12-3 wins at McGill Field Saturday afternoon. The wins granted the Dutchmen a berth into the Commonwealth Conference postseason, as Alvernia swept Elizabethtown.
After a 20-10 road win Friday, the Dutchmen (23-15, 10-8 CC) and Lions (12-23, 4-11) opened relatively quietly on Saturday.
Derek Brousseau found himself pitted in a duel with Albright starter Tyler Storms. Game two was an eruption for the Dutchmen, who used three big innings to rout the Lions. Meanwhile,
Corey Cinicola breezed through seven innings, allowing just three runs for a complete game win.
The team also took the time to honor its 11 seniors with its annual Senior Day. This year's class is an impressive one and includes:
Dustin Adam,
Dustin Deibert,
Caleb Fick,
Aaron Mills,
Tom Rasich,
Zack Rex,
Jacob Rhody,
Ryan Schwartz,
Jordan Witmer,
Ian Younker, and
Colt Zarilla.
Game One
The Dutchmen scored twice in the fourth in a rally that included just two hits. With the bases loaded and one out,
John Hildebrand hit into a fielder's choice.
Aaron Mills was thrown out at home, but all other runners advanced on a throwing error when the Lions tried to turn two.
Lee Webber carried the excitement into his at-bat, singling through the left side to score
Jordan Higgins.
Brousseau (4-2) did his best to steal the show, pitching four shutout innings before finally allowing a run in the fifth. The RBI is credited to catcher Doug Mace, who traded two outs for the run on with a double play ball.
Brousseau allowed the Lions' lone run on three hits and a walk. He struck out five.
Storms (1-5) allowed two runs - none earned - on two hits and seven walks for the loss. He battled with his command but managed to strike out four.
Game Two
The first five batters in the lineup for game two were seniors, and each found ways to contribute to the winning effort. Schwartz, Witmer, and Mills finished with three hits each. Zarilla had two more, and Rhody reached base and scored a run.
The Dutchmen's offense came in waves. The first - a three-run third inning - broke a two-run deficit. With runners at the corners, Dohner singled to left to knock in Witmer.
Tim Filer was the next to step to the plate. He reached on a muffed catch by the first baseman; meanwhile, Rhody and Dohner came in to score.
The Dutchmen scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth on two big hits. Mills hit a bases loaded, two-run single to center to score Zarilla and Schwartz. Filer followed suit with another two-run single later in the inning that knocked in Mills and Witmer.
Six more hits in the bottom of the sixth helped the Dutchmen break a 7-3 lead wider open. The team scored five more runs, including an RBI double by Dohner and RBI singles by Filer, Hildebrand, Schwartz, and Zarilla.
Cinicola (2-5) had a banner outing, throwing seven innings and allowing three runs on just five hits. He struck out a season-high seven batters.
The Lions used three pitchers in the loss, but starter Kevin O'Neill (2-2) was hit with the loss. He allowed seven runs - though just one was earned - on nine hits.
Neither pitcher surrendered a walk.
Dohner and Filer both finished 2 for 3. Dohner had two runs and two RBIs. Filer added a run and two RBIs.
The Dutchmen have concluded their home schedule and regular season conference games. They play at Gettysburg Monday and at Susquehanna Wednesday.
