READING, Pa. - Alvernia sought and found redemption for Friday's loss with a pair of wins over Lebanon Valley Saturday in Reading.
The Dutchmen (18-15, 7-8 CC) were held to just four hits and one run over their two losses. By contrast, the Crusaders (21-8-1, 10-2) were able to show the type of control that has them sitting in first place in the Commonwealth Conference standings.
Game One
Derek Brousseau (3-2) pitched well in game one but was hit with a hard-luck loss. He allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four.
The Crusaders scored both runs in the bottom of the first - each on RBI singles.
Alvernia ace Aaron Benusis (6-1) matched Brousseau's complete game, allowing two hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out eight.
Both Dutchmen hits came from the middle of the lineup.
Jordan Witmer singled in the first in what resulted in the team's best rally effort. Witmer's single advanced Brousseau to second, and both runners were able to slot up one base on a groundout by
Aaron Mills. No Dutchmen player was able to advance past first for the rest of the game.
Mills notched the other hit in the fourth but was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice.
Game Two
Already down 9-0 in the sixth,
Ryan Schwartz doubled to left-center and advanced to third on a groundout. He scored the team's only run on a single through the left side of the infield by Witmer.
Mills had a 10-game hitting streak snapped after being held 0 for 3 in the second game.
Corey Cinicola (1-5) made the start for LVC. He earned the loss for allowing eight runs on six hits and three walks through 3.1 innings. Four pitchers threw in relief with the most effective reliever being
Brent McDowell. He pitched a scoreless three-up, three-down fifth with a strikeout.
Alvernia's Steve Price (5-0) kept his perfect record intact, allowing just two hits and two walks through seven innings.
