ANNVILLE, Pa. - Colt Zarilla put an end to a cold, rainy day at McGill Field with a bases-clearing, three-run triple that gave Lebanon Valley a sweep over Penn State Harrisburg in the ninth inning of game two.
The Dutchmen (17-13) scored eight runs between the third and fourth innings to beat the Nittany Lions (7-22) in game one.
Derek Brousseau scored four runs in game two to help lead LVC through nine rainy innings before Zarilla's game winner.
LVC used 10 pitchers between the two games, and neither starter earned a decision.
Game One
The Nittany Lions jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first and another in the second inning, but the Dutchmen were finally able to make a push in the bottom of the third.
Ryan Schwartz got things going with a one-out double to center. He scored on a throwing error that put Brousseau on second base. Brousseau scored on a groundout by
Jordan Witmer to get the team within a run.
Aaron Mills tripled to right with the bases empty and scored on a single by Zarilla. Both Zarilla and
Jacob Rhody scored on a single by
Tim Filer.
After allowing a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, the Dutchmen rallied for another three runs in the bottom frame of the inning. Witmer and Rhody each picked up RBI singles, and Mills scored on a wild pitch to give the team an 8-5 lead that proved durable.
Jason Barthold allowed five runs - just one earned - in 3.2 innings of work. He fell just short of the win, which ultimately went to
Brent McDowell (2-0). Barthold allowed five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
McDowell did not allow a hit through 1.1 innings but surrendered a run when Penn State shortstop John Cataldo walked, advanced two bases on separate wild pitches, and scored on a groundout.
Mike Specht,
Zack Rex, and
Lee Webber each made appearances on the mount. Webber earned his fourth save for pitching a hitless seventh.
Game Two
The Dutchmen led 8-4 after three innings, but the Nittany Lions exploded for four runs in the fourth and continued to push back into extra innings in game two.
Down 1-0, Brousseau hit a triple to the corner in right field and scored on a fielding error in Witmer's at-bat to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first.
Webber, who moved to center field for game two, walked to lead off the second inning. He stole second and scored on a double by
John Hildebrand. Hildebrand eventually scored on a wild pitch. Rhody knocked in the final two runs of a four-run rally on a single up the middle.
In the later innings of the game, both teams clawed for the win. The Nittany Lions broke an 8-8 tie with a run in the top of the fifth, but the Dutchmen got a pair of runs in the bottom frame on a homerun to right-center by Mills.
The Nittany Lions forced extra innings in the seventh, scoring off of Webber in his attempt to close out the game for his second save of the day.
Both teams scored in the eighth with LVC's run coming on a pinch hit, RBI single by Specht.
The Nittany Lions put up two runs in the ninth but were sent home unhappy when Zarilla crushed a ball to left center. Rhody, Mills, and Brousseau nearly ran each other over flying around the bases to cement the win.
Both Brousseau and Mills finished the second game with two hits. Brousseau hit a double and a triple with four runs and an RBI. Mills extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single and homerun with two runs and three RBIs.
Jimmie Miller made the start on the mound, pitching three innings and allowing eight runs - six earned - on six hits and five walks. He struck out two.
Six players pitched in relief, but
