Game 1 - Lebanon Valley 3, Arcadia 4
ANNVILLE, Pa. - Though a lot of good came out of Lebanon Valley's fifth annual Cystic Fibrosis Day, none of it can be found in the game results. The Dutchmen were swept in a conference doubleheader with Arcadia by identical 4-3 scores.
On the outer concourse, the team held a silent auction and accepted donations for the Cystic Fybrosis Foundation. Prior to the start of the game, Paige Cummings threw out a ceremonial first pitch on behalf of all children who have benefited from the CFF's work.
But after all the fanfare, Arcadia (10-13, 5-4 CC) opened the game's scoring with a three-run second inning against LVC starter
Derek Brousseau. The team put three hits on the board but were aided by a pair of errors that ultimately cast all three runs as unearned.
The Knights scored again in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by second baseman David Jacobs to take a 4-0 lead.
Ryan Schwartz scored LVC's first run on a two-out, bases-loaded wild pitch that put Brousseau on third and
Aaron Mills on second.
Freshman reliever Steven Sciortino came in for starter Marc Gottfried and instantly gave up a walk to
Jordan Witmer to reload the bases and bring the winning run to the plate in
Jacob Rhody. Rhody played his part well, smashing a two-run single through the left side, but that was all the offense the team would get.
The Dutchmen (11-12, 3-6) had never lost a home game or season series to Arcadia prior to Saturday.
Brousseau (2-1) was tagged with his first loss after allowing four runs - one earned - on 10 hits and a walk. He struck out five.
Gottfried (3-4) earned the win for the Knights, while Sciortino picked up his first save of the season.
Game 2 - Lebanon Valley 3, Arcadia 4
Game two played quietly through five innings then hit a crescendo.
Arcadia got on the board with a solo homerun by first baseman Jay Zehring in the top of the fifth. The score incited a ferocity in the Dutchmen, who scratched out a three-run inning in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead that looked solid enough for a win.
Schwartz walked, Brousseau reached on an error, and both men advanced a bag on a beautifully executed bunt single by
Aaron Mills that loaded the bases.
Mike Specht came in to bat for Witmer and reached on a fielding error. Both Schwartz and Brousseau scored. Finally, Mills further flashed his speed scoring from third on a groundout by Rhody.
But as they seemed to do all weekend, the Knights found ways to score in the final inning. They put together three runs on three hits and an error to deny starter
Corey Cinicola a win.
Cinicola (0-4) earned the loss after allowing four runs - just one earned - in 6.2 innings. He surrendered five hits and three walks with five strikeouts.
Lee Webber pitched for the final out.
Jordan Hofferman (5-0) pitched all the way for the Knights, earning the win in a game in which he allowed five hits and two walks with three strikeouts. He did not allow an earned run.
LVC travels to Frostburg State Monday at 3 p.m. and returns home the next day for a 3:30 p.m. game with Wilkes.
