ANNVILLE, Pa. - Caleb Fick had his best start of the season, pitching a full nine inning game in a 2-1 loss to Widener Friday. He allowed just four hits and one walk, while striking out four.
So accurate was Fick (2-1) that he did not allow a Widener batter to take him to three balls until the seventh inning.
Widener starter Jason Ferrie (2-1) held the Dutchmen (8-8, 2-2 CC) scoreless through eight innings of work and left the game with a 1-0 lead.
Dustin Deibert threatened to score for LVC in the second inning after reaching on an error. He advanced to third on a single throught the left side by Andrew Wooley but was gunned down at the plate on a solid throw by Widener left fielder Michael Riverso.
Dennis Hocker doubled down the left field line, advanced on a single, and came around to score the Pride's first run on a sac fly by shortstop Matt Hone.
Dan Sieracki reached on an error in the top of the ninth and scored the eventual game winner on a double steal - unearned.
The Dutchmen showed flashes of a rally in the bottom of the inning.
Aaron Mills and
Jordan Witmer opened the inning with back-to-back walks off of reliever Bill Hollingsworth.
Mills was thrown out on a
Jacob Rhody fielder's choice sac bunt that advanced Witmer to second. Witmer advanced to third on a fielder's choice by
Dustin Deibert with Rhody being thrown out at second.
Witmer scored the team's only run when pinch hitter
Tom Rasich reached on an error.
Ryan Schwartz had two singles in the game.
Hocker had two of four hits for Widener (11-5, 3-1).
Weather permitting, LVC will head to Widener Saturday for a doubleheader at 11 a.m.
