Big Innings Push Baseball Past Messiah, 7-5

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley put four runs on the board in the second inning and another three in the fifth to top Messiah, 7-5, Monday.
 
Ryan Schwartz, Jordan Witmer, and Jacob Rhody each finished with three hits for LVC (8-6, 2-1 CC), while Lee Webber led with a pair of RBIs.
 
Witmer was the first man on in the second after singling to right. He went on to score the team's only earned run of the inning.
 
Derek Brousseau reached on an error while trying to sacrifice Witmer over to second. Rhody singled to left, advancing both runners and loading the bases. Andrew Wooley reached on an error by the second baseman, forcing Witmer home for the first run.
 
Webber knocked in Brousseau on a fielder's choice. Phillip Dohner doubled in Rhody, and Schwartz singled in Webber.
 
Messiah (5-10, 1-2) made it 4-3 with two runs in the third and another in the fourth but never held a lead in the game.
 
In the fifth, it was again Witmer who started up the Dutchmen offense. Witmer singled to left and advanced on consecutive singles by Brousseau and Rhody. Both Witmer and Brousseau scored on an error. Rhody came around to score on a sac fly by Webber.
 
The Falcons scored runs in the seventh and ninth to bring the game to its 7-5 final.
 
Brousseau (1-0) pitched six innings for the win. He allowed four runs (two earned) on 10 hits and a walk. He struck out four. Webber earned his second save after shifting from left field to the mound. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out a pair.
 
Jon Lapp earned the loss for Messiah. He pitched six innings and allowed all seven runs - just one earned.

The Dutchmen host Ursinus Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
