Game 1 - Lebanon Valley 1, Messiah 10
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Corey Cinicola started game one and lasted just a third of an inning in a 10-1 loss to Messiah Saturday.
The Falcons (5-9, 1-1 CC) scored six runs in the first, including a two-run double by right fielder Derek Drake, to deflate the Dutchmen (6-6, 1-1).
LVC scored its only run in the second inning. Catcher
Jordan Witmer singled to center and eventually scored on a fielder's choice by third baseman Andrew Wooley.
Messiah scored again in the fourth against reliever
Mike Specht and three more times in the sixth against
Patrick Reagan. Reagan allowed a two-run triple to shortstop John Brubaker and a sac fly that sent Brubaker home.
The highlight of the game for LVC was an individual achievement: second baseman
Ryan Schwartz collected his 100
th career hit on a two-out single in the fifth inning.
Cinicola earned the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk.
Tory Arnesen earned the win for the Falcons.
Game 2 – Lebanon Valley 17, Messiah 13
The Dutchmen reversed course in the first inning of game two. They managed to keep the Falcons off the basepaths in the top of the inning and came out swinging for eight runs in the bottom half.
Shortstop Phillip Dohner led off with his first collegiate homerun – a shot down the left field line. Schwartz and Zarilla followed with back-to-back hits and came around to score on a two-run double to right-center by
Aaron Mills.
Each of the next four batters hit safely and came around to score for LVC, including Dohner, who smashed a two-run triple to right-center.
Up 8-2 in the bottom of the second, Witmer reached on a throwing error and came around when Mills smashed a long homerun to right-center.
Like Schwartz in game one, Mills earned his 100
th career hit on the homer.
Left fielder
Derek Brousseau manufactured a run in the third by tripling to left-center and scoring on a wild pitch.
Wooley and Brousseau scored in the fifth on a two-run single by Dohner.
Kyle Wenger scored as a pinch runner in the sixth, followed by runs by Mills, Wooley, and Brousseau.
Messiah made a four-run push in the fifth inning and scored another five runs in the top of the seventh.
Dohner and Mills each finished with five RBIs in the game. Both players fell a hit away from the cycle: Dohner needed a double and Mills a triple. Five LVC players finished with three hits: Dohner, Mills, Schwartz, Wooley, and Brousseau.
Caleb Fick started for the Dutchmen and - despite allowing eight runs in 4.2 innings of work - earned a win.
Brent McDowell and
Zack Rex worked in relief.
Paul Broomell earned the loss for Messiah. He allowed eight runs on nine hits in an inning of work.
LVC hosts Penn State Berks Sunday at 1 p.m.
