ANNVILLE, Pa. – Top-ranked Shenandoah swept a doubleheader from Lebanon Valley baseball Thursday afternoon at McGill Field. The Hornets claimed a 7-4 win through 10 innings in game one and a 5-1 victory in the nightcap.
Lebanon Valley posted 20 combined hits in the doubleheader, including 13 in the opening game.
Colt Zarilla and
Dustin Deibert paced the Dutchmen in game one, tallying three hits each, while
Jordan Witmer notched two hits in the second contest.
The Dutchmen travel to Franklin & Marshall Sunday for a single game beginning at 1 p.m.
GAME ONE
Shenandoah put up one run in each of the first three innings and another in the fifth pushed the Hornets to a 4-0 lead. LVC responded in the bottom of the fifth with one run scoring. Thomas Rasich started with a single to center field and moved to second after a single by
Derek Brousseau. A balk advanced both runners a base, and a fielder's choice scored Rasich from third.
Three runs from the Dutchmen in the sixth inning tied the score at four.
Jacob Rhody and Deibert hit singles to reach base and a throwing error by Shenandoah scored both runners while allowing Witmer to reach third. A groundout from Rasich scored Witmer to even things up.
After a scoreless seventh inning by both teams, the game went into extra innings. Shenandoah put runners on in the eighth and ninth innings, while Lebanon Valley had a runner on in the eighth. The Hornets sealed the win in the 10th inning with three runs scoring. Deibert reached base for LVC in the 10th inning with two outs, but a groundout ended the game.
Caleb Fick pitched eight innings for the Dutchmen. He allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out four batters.
Derek Brousseau tossed the final two innings in the loss.
GAME TWO
The Hornets scored a run in the first and second innings on ground outs for the early 2-0 lead. LVC had runners in scoring position through the first two innings, but tough pitching from Shenandoah starter Brian Goddard stranded the runners with inning ending strikeouts.
Another run scored in the fifth inning for Shenandoah for a three run advantage. Greg Van Sickler drew a one-out walk, advanced on a ground out, and scored on a single down the right field line. A strong throw to third base by left fielder Brousseau tagged out a runner to end the inning on the play.
Starting the sixth inning with a single to left, Shenandoah's Keaton Neeb followed with a homer to deep left field for two runs. Pete Moro replaced
Corey Cinicola after and recorded the final three outs.
Lebanon Valley reached the scoreboard in the sixth inning with one run scoring.
Aaron Mills hit a leadoff single, and both Zarilla and Rhody followed with singles to load the bases. A throwing error by Shenandoah sent Mills home for the only run.
Jake Becker started on the mound for LVC and pitched four innings. He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five. Cinicola tossed one inning and gave up three runs, while Moro finished the game.
