ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley baseball split a doubleheader with Elizabethtown Saturday afternoon to wrap up the 2011 season. The Dutchmen recorded a 3-1 win in the first game, while the Blue Jays posted a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.
Elizabethtown claimed the three games series and secured the final spot in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs. Lebanon Valley concludes the season with a 17-19 overall record and an 8-10 mark in conference action.
Prior to today's games, the Dutchmen honored their five seniors –
Jake Becker,
Nate Blough,
Caleb Fick,
Peter Moro, and
Shane Specht.
GAME ONE
Derek Brousseau went 3-for-3 at the plate and
Aaron Mills tallied two RBI to lead the Dutchmen.
Elizabethtown took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Andrew Gordon hit a leadoff single and went on to score off a single by Steve Motika. LVC pitcher
Nate Blough held the Blue Jays scoreless for the remainder, and struck out five in the win.
Lebanon Valley tied the game in the fourth after
Dustin Deibert reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a double by
Jordan Witmer.
The Dutchmen secured the win in the fifth with two runs.
Kevin Greene drew a one-out walk and Brousseau reached first on a single. A sacrifice bunt by
Ryan Schwartz moved both runners, while a single by Mills scored both.
GAME TWO
Two runs in the first inning gave the Blue Jays an early lead. A double by Motika scored one run, while an error sent another run home.
Elizabethtown extended its lead to five runs in the fourth. Back-to-back two out walks put runners on and both scored on a double from Motika. A single by Dillon Tagle scored the final run of the inning. The Blue Jays final run of the game came in the sixth inning.
Lebanon Valley broke through in the seventh, but came up short with only one run scoring. Witmer opened the inning with a single, advanced on a sacrifice by
Jordan Higgins, and scored on a single by
Andrew Germann.
Deibert started on the mound and pitched six innings for the Dutchmen. He allowed six runs on eight hits and struck out four. Moro finished the game, striking out one of the three batters he faced.
