ANNVILLE, Pa. – Strong defensive play down the stretch pushed Lebanon Valley baseball to a 6-5 win over Johns Hopkins Monday afternoon.
Dustin Deibert led the team, picking up the win and tallying his 100th career hit.
Aaron Mills and
Jacob Rhody paced the offense with two RBI each.
Derek Brousseau and Rhody added two hits each against the Blue Jays.
Corey Cinicola secured the win for the Dutchmen in the ninth inning. Coming in with one out and the bases loaded, Cinicola forced the Blue Jays into a double play to seal LVC's third-straight win.
Five runs in the second inning gave LVC the early advantage. Thomas Rasich started the scoring with his first career home run to left field. With one out,
Kyle Wenger reached on an error, Brousseau hit a single, and
Ryan Schwartz drew a walk to load the bases. A walk to Mills sent one runner home and
Colt Zarilla scored another run off a sacrifice fly. Rhody's double to left scored the final two runs of the inning.
Johns Hopkins cut Lebanon Valley's lead to three runs with two scoring in the third inning. Sam Wernick hit a leadoff solo home run to left center and Mike Denlinger scored off a single down the left field line.
Mills tacked on another run for the Dutchmen in the fourth, sending Brousseau home with a single to left. The Blue Jays responded in the fifth with one run scoring off a double to center by Mike Denlinger.
A solo home run from Zach Small in the sixth put the Blue Jays within two, as LVC led 6-4. Johns Hopkins threatened in the ninth with the leadoff batter reaching first after being hit by a pitch. Back-to-back singles with one out loaded the bases, and a single to right by Steve Bejsiuk scored the fifth run of the game for the Blue Jays. Cinicola entered the game for LVC after and forced Joe Borrelli into a double play.
Dustin Deibert made his third start of the season and pitched six innings. He allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out four. Zarilla took over in the seventh, tossing one and two-thirds innings and striking out three. Tallying the final out in the eighth was
