VERO BEACH, Fla. – Continuing spring break play in Florida, Lebanon Valley baseball split a doubleheader with Bridgewater State Tuesday afternoon at Dodgertown. The Dutchmen claimed the first game 6-1, while the Bears took game two, 7-5.
In the first game,
Mike Specht made his collegiate debut on the mound. Pitching five and one-third innings, he allowed two earned runs on four hits.
Peter Moro held the Bears scoreless and struck out two in the final one and two-thirds innings.
Thomas Rasich continued his strong start to the season, going 2-for-3 at the plate, including a bases-clearing double to the left field warning track in the first inning.
Jacob Rhody notched a run, RBI, and stolen base, while
Ryan Schwartz added a run and drew a walk.
Lebanon Valley started the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single by Rhody.
Dustin Deibert continued with a single and
Jordan Witmer reached first after being hit by a pitch to set up Rasich's three RBI double. Leading 4-0 after one, LVC's speed led to two more runs in the fourth as Rasich and
Derek Brousseau scored off a wild pitch.
Specht held Bridgewater State scoreless until the sixth inning for his first collegiate win, and Moro held the Bears off the scoreboard for the save.
Aaron Mills was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Schwartz notched two runs and an RBI in the nightcap. The Dutchmen were held scoreless until the fifth inning when Mills notched a single to send
Jordan Higgins home. LVC added another run after a fielder's choice by
Colt Zarilla in the inning.
Registering RBI singles from Schwartz, Mills, and a sacrifice fly from Zarilla in the sixth inning, Lebanon Valley came within one run at 6-5. Pitcher
Ian Younker entered the game in the sixth and worked out of a jam to hold Bridgewater State off the scoreboard.
Unable to take advantage of walks and hit by pitch scenarios in the seventh inning, the Dutchmen stranded all three base runners and fell short, 7-5.
The Dutchmen face Northwestern (Minn.) at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Fort Pierce, Fla.
