ANNVILLE, Pa. – Alvernia swept the Saturday doubleheader from Lebanon Valley baseball to take the three game series. The Crusaders posted a 3-1 win in the first game and notched a 10-0 shutout in the nightcap.
Ryan Schwartz went 4-for-4 with a run scored in the first game to lead the Dutchmen.
The teams stayed close in the first game, with the first four innings remaining scoreless. Lebanon Valley had 10 base runners through the fourth inning, while holding Alvernia to just three runners.
Alvernia struck first in the fifth inning with Eric Domitrovi hitting a single to left field. A groundout advanced him to second and a single to left by Tim Ahlquist scored Domitrovi for the early lead.
Lebanon Valley responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring a run to tie the game at one. Schwartz led off with a single to right center. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Aaron Mills and to third on a groundout. Schwartz went on to score off a passed ball.
The Crusaders regained the lead in the sixth inning with Chris Ray scoring off a triple to right center by Reid Martin. Alvernia added another run in the seventh after Leon Stimpson drew a two-out walk and scored on a triple by Brian Witkowski.
Schwartz reached base in the seventh inning on a single but was tagged out on a double play to end the inning.
Andrew Kirk picked up the win for Alvernia after pitching six innings. He allowed one run on six hits and struck out seven batters.
Nate Blough suffered the loss for LVC after pitching five and two-thirds innings. He gave up two runs on seven hits and struck out four, while
Mike Specht closed out the game. With his four strikeouts, Blough reached the 100 career strikeout plateau.
The Crusaders ran away with the second game, scoring three runs in the first inning for the early lead. Alvernia again threatened in the second inning but the Dutchmen tagged one runner out at home and stranded another on third base.
Two more runs scored in the second inning for Alvernia with a double by Witkoswki scoring one run and a sacrifice fly from Ray sending another run home.
A five run fifth inning completed the scoring for the Crusaders. Alvernia tallied five hits in the inning, including a triple from Stimpson.
LVC tallied just four hits in the game and had 10 base runners.
Corey Cinicola pitched four innings in the loss, giving up five runs on nine hits and posting two strikeouts.
Derek Brousseau,
Ian Younker, and
Peter Moro each pitched an inning for the Dutchmen.
The Dutchmen return to action Tuesday when they host Neumann at 3:30 p.m.
