READING, Pa. – Notching 11 hits while holding Lebanon Valley to three, Alvernia baseball went on to claim a 10-1 victory in game one of the series Friday afternoon.
Jordan Higgins recorded the only RBI for the Dutchmen.
Ryan Schwartz opened the game by drawing a walk. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a ground out. Alvernia starter Chuck Nicholas ended the inning with a strikeout to strand Schwartz in the base paths.
The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when the teams traded runs.
Jacob Rhody led off with a single to center field and advanced to second off a wild pitch. A groundout moved Rhody to third and he scored off a single down the left field line by Higgins.
Alvernia broke the game open the next inning, scoring five runs for a 6-1 lead. Three players notched an RBI each and Chris Ray sent the final two runners home on a single to center.
LVC put runners on base in the sixth, eighth, and ninth innings but were unable to score. The Crusaders added two runs in the seventh behind a solo homer from Leon Stimpson and two more in the eighth inning.
Caleb Fick started the game for the Dutchmen and pitched six innings. Allowing eight runs on 10 hits, he struck out four batters.
Mike Specht pitched the seventh inning and
Brent McDowell finished the final inning, giving up two runs on one hit.
The Dutchmen return to McGill Field Saturday to close out the three-game series with Alvernia. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
