READING, Pa. – Finishing five games in three days, Lebanon Valley baseball dropped a doubleheader to Penn State Berks Sunday afternoon. The Nittany Lions won the first game 5-4, and claimed a shutout in the nightcap, 5-0.
Penn State tallied four runs in the third inning of game one for the early advantage. Singles from Connor Corson and Nick Vitelli scored two runs, while a wild pitch and an error sent two more runs across home plate.
The Dutchmen surged back in the fourth inning with three runs scoring to come within one. A single from
Kevin Greene and double to center field by
Kyle Wenger put two runners on base. Both went on to score off a double to right by
Derek Brousseau. The final run scored with a single by
Ryan Schwartz.
Lebanon Valley tied the score the next inning with a leadoff walk to
Aaron Mills leading to him scoring off a sacrifice fly by Greene.
A single, sacrifice bunt, and walk put runners in scoring position for the Nittany Lions in the sixth inning. A wild pitch allowed the winning run to score.
Jordan Witmer reached base off a single in the seventh, but the Dutchmen couldn't complete the comeback.
Mike Specht made his second start of the season and pitched five and one-thirds innings.
Colt Zarilla made his first appearance of the year and secured the final two outs.
In the nightcap, Penn State Berks tallied three runs in the second inning and two in the sixth for the win. The Dutchmen posted just one hit in the contest, a single from Schwartz. Getting seven runners on base, tough defense by the Nittany Lions prevented LVC from having a runner advance to third.
Corey Cinicola made his first collegiate start for LVC. He pitched five and one-third innings, while
Ian Younker posted the final two outs in the sixth inning.
LVC travels to Dickinson Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. game.
