Baseball Splits With Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Lebanon Valley baseball concluded a three-game series with Elizabethtown Monday afternoon, splitting the doubleheader. The Dutchmen recorded a 7-1 win in the first game, while falling 6-5 in the nightcap. Last week, Elizabethtown posted a 5-2 victory in 10 innings to open the three-game series. Sophomore Dustin Deibert went 2-for-3 at the plate and classmate Colt Zarilla batted in two runs in the opening game. Deibert continued in the second game, notching two hits, two runs and three RBIs.

GAME ONE

LVC struck early, scoring five runs through the first two innings. A single to left field by senior Grant Wiest scored one run, and a hit to center by sophomore Jacob Rhody sent another runner home. The third run scored off a single through the left side from Deibert, concluding the three runs on three hits inning.

The Dutchmen posted two runs on four hits in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead, with Zarilla scoring both runs of a home run to left field, his second of the season.

Elizabethtown broke onto the scoreboard in the third inning with one run scoring, but that was as close as it came, with LVC adding two more runs in the seventh inning to claim the victory. Deibert scored on a throwing error by the catcher and a sacrifice fly from freshman Kevin Greene sent pinch runner David Hallinan home.

Junior Nate Blough started on the mound for LVC, pitching five innings and striking out four for his fourth win of the season. Classmate Caleb Fick pitched the final two innings, holding the Blue Jays scoreless.

GAME TWO

Freshman Derek Brousseau started things off for LVC with a single up the middle to score a run in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. Elizabethtown tied the game with a run scoring in the fifth inning.

Both teams scored four runs in the sixth inning to keep the score tied at five aside. Zarilla started the inning with a double down the left field line and scored off a throwing error. Deibert then hit a three-run home run to left field, his first of the season.

Elizabethtown claimed the win in the bottom of the seventh inning with a double scoring the winning run.

Junior Shane Specht started and pitched four innings while posting five strikeouts. Junior Jake Becker pitched just over an inning, striking out three of the nine batters he faced. Brousseau relieved Becker, posting two strikeouts in the loss.

The Dutchmen host Johns Hopkins on Wednesday afternoon beginning at 3:30 p.m.
