Baseball Splits Twinbill With Widener

CHESTER, Pa. – Lebanon Valley baseball split a doubleheader with Widener Saturday afternoon. The Pride posted an 8-0 shutout in the first game, while the Dutchmen recorded a 4-3 come from behind victory in the nightcap.

Senior Grant Wiest led LVC, going 2-for-3 at the plate in the first game and batting in all four runs in the second game including a three-run home run in the seventh for the lead.

The Dutchmen (20-9, 8-4 CC) tallied one win in the three-game series, while Widener (13-9, 8-4 CC) notched two victories.

GAME ONE
Widener held LVC to just five hits, with Wiest and sophomore Dylan Holland posting two hits each.

The Pride took an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning. A single and sacrifice fly scored one run each, and a single by Tom Mahoney sent two more runners across home plate.

Widener added a run in the second and third innings, and two more in the sixth for the win.

Junior Shane Specht pitched all six innings for LVC, posting four strikeouts in the loss.

GAME TWO
The Pride started off early again with two runs scoring in the first inning off a single to right field by Dennis Hocker.

Lebanon Valley broke up the shutout in the fifth inning with Wiest scoring sophomore Ryan Schwartz off a single up the middle.

Widener tacked on another run in the sixth with a single to left scoring Joe Peticca.

Holland led off the seventh, reaching first after being hit by a pitch. A walk to Schwartz moved Holland to second and a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Aaron Mills advanced the runners. A three-run home run to right with two outs from Wiest gave LVC the 4-3 lead.

Sophomore Dustin Deibert took over on the mound in the seventh. After walking the first Widener batter faced, Deibert retired the next three batters for the win. Junior Nate Blough started and pitched six innings, striking out four for the Dutchmen.

Lebanon Valley's game against DeSales set for Monday afternoon has been cancelled. The Dutchmen travel to McDaniel on Wednesday for a game beginning at 3:30 p.m.
