WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Lebanon Valley Baseball survived a late rally from King's to record a 15-13 win Wednesday afternoon. Senior Grant Wiest led the Dutchmen at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a season-high eight RBIs. Pitcher Jake Becker made a relief appearance in the ninth inning, coming in with two runners on and no outs. Becker sealed the victory after striking out a Monarch for the third out with the bases loaded.
The Dutchmen (6-3) opened the game with one run scored after sophomore Colt Zarilla doubled to left center. The Monarchs posted two runs in the bottom of the first to quickly take the lead.
LVC added two runs in the third and six runs in the fourth to hold a 9-5 advantage. In the third, the Dutchmen tallied two runs on two hits with a double by sophomore Aaron Mills and a single from Wiest.
In the fourth inning, Lebanon Valley scored six runs on just three hits. All hits and runs for the Dutchmen came with two outs. Sophomore Ryan Schwartz notched a single to shortstop to score two runs, and Zarilla drew a walk with the bases loaded to send a run home. Wiest then hit a bases clearing double to left center to add three more runs to the scoreboard.
King's added a run in the fifth and Lebanon Valley scored four in the sixth and two in the seventh to take a commanding 15-6 lead. A double from Zarilla scored a run, a single from Wiest sent two across home plate, and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Dustin Deibert scored a run in the sixth.
LVC tacked on two more runs on three hits in the seventh with Wiest scoring two more off a double to left field.
The Monarchs started a rally late in the game, scoring three runs in the eighth and three in the ninth but fell short.
Junior Caleb Fick started on the mound for LVC, pitching five innings and striking out five batters. Freshman Derek Brousseau threw two innings in middle relief, striking out three. Junior Peter Moro pitched in the eighth and Becker finished the game in the ninth.
LVC travels to Penn State Harrisburg Saturday for a doublehdear with the Nittany Lions beginning at noon.
