GRANTHAM, Pa. - Lebanon Valley swept the season series from Messiah Saturday, taking both ends of their Commonwealth Conference doubleheader with a 4-1 win in the opener and a drama-packed 7-6 extra-innings victory in the nightcap.
The Dutchmen (12-11-1, 3-0 CC) moved above .500 for the season and are in sole possession of first place after going winless in conference play last year. The Falcons, the defending CC champions, drop to 7-16-1 and 1-5 in conference play.
With the second game going to the 10th inning tied 2-2, LVC's
Colt Zarilla hit a grand slam in the top of the inning, followed by a solo shot from
Joe Soupik to take a 7-2 lead.
However, Messiah answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, and the Falcons had the bases loaded with a chance to win the game when Ben Kirk grounded out to end the game.
Dustin Deibert picked up the win in relief for the Dutchmen.
Earlier in game one, LVC took an early 2-0 lead and extended it to 4-0 on
Grant Wiest's two-run double in the top of the fifth to score
Brent Ruminski and Ryan Schwartz.
Jake Becker went the distance and saved himself in the seventh by getting the final three outs with the tying run at the plate.
LVC will visit York College Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
