Alvernia Tops Baseball, 15-4

Alvernia University piled on 18 hits as it ran away with a 15-4 win Friday in a non-conference win over Lebanon Valley College.

THe Dutchmen (7-10) gave up runs in seven innings to the Crusaders (13-5), who sweep the three-game season series with the win.

Reid Martin led Alvernia with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with two RBI and four runs, and Steve DeBarberie was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs.

Shane Zellers earned the win, going five full innings and allowing three runs. Starter Jake Becker took the loss for LVC, allowing seven runs. Nate Blough, Ian Younker, Stefan Capiraletti, and Bobby Kinsman combined for four innings of relief.

Alvernia went on top immediately with a three-run first, including Martin's two-run single to start the scoring.

Dylan Holland knocked in a run in the second to make it a 3-1 game, but Alvernia added two more in the bottom of the third on Eric Domitrovits's single and Tyler Runkle's ground-out.

LVC again answered back with Colt Zarilla's RBI double and Joe Soupik's single to score two runs in the third, but Alvernia began to pull away with two more runs in the fourth.

The Crusaders scored runs in the sixth and seventh before playing three in the eighth, and Chris Simoncini hit a towering lead-off pinch-hit home run to the base of Fasik Bridge to punctuate the win in the ninth.

LVC will continue their weekend homestand Saturday with two against Penn State Harrisburg.
