ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley advanced to the championship match of the 2017 MAC Commonwealth Championship Tournament thanks to a 5-1 victory over Stevenson at the Shankroff Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon.
The Flying Dutchmen (12-5), the tourney's No. 2 seed, earned their second win over the third-seeded Mustangs (6-13) in four days and will travel to top-seeded Messiah on Saturday afternoon for a shot at the league championship.
LVC grabbed the early advantage by securing a pair of victories in doubles play. Reigning MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week
Jonathan Hastings and
Jordan Heavel defeated SU's Peter Appiah and Mike Richmond 8-4 in the third doubles match before
Nick Jones and
Blake Martin finished off an 8-4 win over Doug Vaughn and Kevin Slujtner in the second contest.
In singles action, Heavel, LVC's No. 6 player, made quick work of Stevenson's Tony Beres in a 6-0, 6-1 victory, while Martin came away with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Richmond in a battle of each team's No. 5.
Reed Morris clinched the playoff victory for the Dutchmen with a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Appiah in the No. 4 matchup.
Lebanon Valley advances to its first MAC Commonwealth Championship Match since 2012 and will take on a Falcon squad that defeated the Dutchmen 7-2 in their only meeting this spring. LVC will look to avenge the loss on Saturday afternoon.
