ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley held off a local rival when the Flying Dutchmen edged Elizabethtown 5-4 at the Shankroff Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
LVC (3-4) grabbed an early advantage when the team's No. 2 and No. 3 doubles pairings emerged victorious.
Nick Jones and
Blake Martin defeated the Blue Jays' Nathan Dowling and Matthew Hornbaker in the second doubles match, while
Jonathan Hastings and
Jordan Heavel knocked off E-Town's Nick Strobel and Tyler Spinello in the third outing. Both duos won by an 8-6 margin.
It was Lebanon Valley's 3-4-5 portion of the solo lineup that clinched the victory thanks to individual wins by Hastings,
Reed Morris, and
Blake Martin. In the No. 3 singles contest, Hastings topped Hornbaker 6-4 and 7-5. The fourth matchup saw Morris handle Spinello 6-1, 6-3. It was Martin's hard-fought three-set victory (6-4, 4-6, 6-2) that clinched the match for the Dutchmen.
LVC will have one last non-conference match this spring when the squad hosts Ursinus on Thursday night. The Dutchmen then begin conference play against Alvernia on Saturday afternoon.
