Lebanon Valley 5, Messiah 3

ANNVILLE, Pa. - Lebanon Valley advanced to its first Commonwealth Conference final since 2009, dropping Messiah 5-3 in a hard-fought tournament semifinal match on Wednesday.

The Dutchmen (17-5) will advance to play at Elizabethtown on Saturday, a 5-0 winner over Alvernia. LVC won two of three doubles matches, then sandwiched wins around Messiah's points in the middle of the lineup to capture the match.

Sam Calabria became LVC's all-time season singles wins leader with his victory at No. 6, improving to 21-5 during his freshman campaign.

In doubles, Messiah managed to turn around a regular-season sweep as Peter Shuck and Zachary Brunner beat Ryan Weitzel and Joel Ramos 8-3 at No. 2. LVC took the other two flights, both by 8-3 scores as Ethan Grodzinski and Roger Van Scyoc won at No. 1 and Sam Calabria and Kyle Kahl took No. 3.

In singles, Calabria cruised to his win over Chris Brittingham, 6-2, 6-1, to put LVC up 3-1, but David Wichert's 6-3, 6-0 victory against Ryan Weitzel at No. 3 tightened the match before Shuck beat Andrew Wilson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 to tie it 3-3.

LVC responded with a big win at No. 5 by Ramos, who avenged a regular-season three-set loss to Brunner with a 7-5, 6-2 win, and Grodzinski clinched the victory at No. 1, winning 6-4, 6-2 over Michael Brookhart.

Only Van Scyoc's match at No. 2 was left unfinished, with Andrew Wismer a set up.
