Preview: M. Tennis's Title Hunt Begins Wednesday

Commonwealth Conference Men's Tennis Championship Tournament
[2] Lebanon Valley (16-5, 5-1 CC) vs. [3] Messiah (7-5, 4-2 CC)
Wednesday, May 2 at 3:30 p.m. – Annville, Pa.

The Playoffs
LVC is seeking its first Commonwealth Conference finals appearance since 2009, when it won the championship. The winner of the LVC-Messiah semifinal will play the winner of Elizabethtown-Alvernia on Saturday at the higher seed.

The Match
LVC will put out the same line-up it had against Messiah in the regular season, led by the top two of Ethan Grodzinski (13-10) and Roger Van Scyoc (12-5). #3 Ryan Weitzel is 12-8 this season, and #4 Andrew Wilson is 11-9. #5 Joel Ramos has had a terrific senior year at 14-6, while freshman Sam Calabria's 20-5 record has made him LVC's most reliable points at #6. LVC's doubles line-up is also the same, led by Grodzinski/Van Scyoc at #1, Weitzel/Ramos at #2, and the red-hot team of Calabria/Kahl at #3, who have won 12 straight and went undefeated in conference play to get to 13-2 this season. Only one change for Messiah as they shuffle their #2 and #3 doubles teams, with singles left the same as the regular-season meeting. #1 Michael Brookhart is 7-5 this spring, while #2 Andrew Wismer is 5-7. Messiah's strength has been in the middle of the lineup, with David Wichert (7-5) at #3, Peter Shuck (9-2) at #4, and Zachary Brunner (6-4) playing #5. Chris Brittingham has been a solid 8-4 at #6.

Calabria Goes for Singles Season Mark
Freshman Sam Calabria has had a season to remember, and a win today would give him 21 for the season, a new LVC record. He is currently tied with Chris Hileman and Josh Shellenberger for the single-season record. Calabria is 20-5 in singles this season.

LVC-Messiah In the Regular Season [Recap]
LVC swept doubles, then split singles with Messiah in a 6-3 win in Grantham on April 17. LVC cruised at the top two flights with wins by Ethan Grodzinski and Roger Van Scyoc, and Sam Calabaria beat Chris Brittingham at #6. Two of Messiah's points came in hard-fought three-set victories as David Wichert beat Ryan Weitzel 4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-4 at #3 and Zachary Brunner topped Joel Ramos 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 at #5.
