CAMP HILL, Pa. - After 10 cancellations in the last three weeks, it sometimes seemed as if the men's tennis team's greatest foe was the weather. So the Dutchmen did the one thing they could to beat Mother Nature, heading inside to face an even tougher test and walking out with a 7-2 win over Messiah on Wednesday.
The match was played indoors at the Camp Hill Tennis Club after initially being scheduled to be played in Annville on April 6, then in Grantham April 13. With rain still falling on Wednesday, the match was moved to Camp Hill and LVC (7-7, 1-1 CC) picked up its first Commonwealth Conference win of the season by sweeping the doubles points, then battling through four three-set matches to win four singles points.
It was the first in a scheduled marathon of CC matches for the Dutchmen, who are slated to play four conference matches in four days, all on the road, due to reschedulings.
That included a key win at No. 1 by
Ethan Grodzinski, who outlasted Andrew Wismer 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, and by
Joel Ramos at No. 6, who beat Freddie Behnke 6-3, 4-6, 12-10.
At No. 3,
Brad Sweigart was a 6-1, 7-5 winner over David Wichert, and
Ryan Weitzel beat Chris Brittingham 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4. Messiah's points came at Nos. 2 and 5 as Justin Meckley beat
Tom Neckelmann 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, and Luke Sisson topped
Andrew Wilson 0-6, 6-3, 10-8.
In doubles, Grodzinski/Weitzel defeated Wismer/Meckley 8-6 at No. 1, Neckelmann/Sweigart beat Wichert/Behnke 8-3, and Wilson/
