Baseball Splits To Finish Series With Widener

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley baseball concluded its series with Widener Saturday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader. The Dutchmen claimed the first game by a 2-1 score, while the Pride posted a 12-3 win in the nightcap.

Dustin Deibert went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the first game for LVC, while Dustin Adam notched two RBI in the second contest.

In the first game, the Dutchmen opened the scoring in the second inning. Deibert hit a double to right center to reach base and advanced to third on a passed ball. Thomas Rasich sent Deibert home with a single to center field.

LVC had a runner on in the fourth and fifth innings, but both were caught in the base paths.

Looking to seal the win in the sixth, Colt Zarilla rounded the bases on a single to right field by Aaron Mills after reaching on a single to left.

Widener had runners on base six times through the first six innings, but were unable to score. The Pride broke up the scoreless streak in the seventh. Jason Brooke reached base after being hit by a pitch and was sent home off a single to left field from Matt Hone.

Nate Blough pitched the complete game, picking up his second win of the season. He allowed just one run on four hits and struck out five.

The Pride didn't hesitate in the second game, scoring two runs in the first inning after leadoff batter Tom DeAngelis hit a double to start things off.

Adding a run in the third and two in the fifth, Widener took a 5-0 lead. The Pride broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring five runs. Getting into a jam, LVC walked in a run late in the inning and a double to left field by Hone cleared the bases.

Widener continued to hit the ball in the seventh, scoring two more runs to take a 12-0 lead.

With Widener's Rick Kazigian tossing a no-hitter through six innings, he looked to wrap up the win in the seventh.

Lebanon Valley ended Kazigian's streak to begin the inning as Mills notched a single to center. Jacob Rhody continued with a single up the middle and Kyle Wenger drew a walk to load the bases. Pinch hitting for the Dutchmen, Cody Richard sent Mills home on a ground out and Adam closed out the scoring with a single to left scoring the other two runners. Chasing Kazigian from the game, relief pitcher Bill Hollingsworth finished the game by tallying the final two outs.

Shane Specht started on the mound for LVC and pitched four and one-third innings. He allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out two. With two fanned batters, Specht reached the 100 career strikeout plateau and currently has 101 strikeouts.

Derek Brousseau came in to toss the next one and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on two hits. Pitching two-thirds of the seventh, Peter Moro had two runs score, while Brent McDowell finished the game. Making his second appearance of the season, McDowell faced two batters and recorded the final out.

Lebanon Valley travels to Penn State Berks Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
