ANNVILLE, Pa. – Messiah swept Lebanon Valley baseball in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at McGill Field, posting an 11-3 win in the first game and a 4-1 victory in the nightcap. Sophomore
Ryan Schwartz went 2-for-3 at the plate and freshman
Kevin Greene hit a two-run home run in game one. Sophomore
Jacob Rhody led LVC in the second game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
With the three-game series sweep of the Dutchmen, Messiah clinches the final Commonwealth Conference playoff spot.
GAME ONE
Messiah jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning. With two outs, Wes Hollenbach hit a double to right and the next three batters followed with triples. A fly out to right ended the inning
The Falcons added to their lead in the second with a three-run home run from Sheldon Witmer. A homer from Ryan Brown in the third inning pushed Messiah to a 9-0 advantage.
Lebanon Valley reached the scoreboard in the fourth inning with sophomore
Dustin Deibert hitting a two-out triple to right center field. A passed ball during classmate
Aaron Mills' at-bat sent Deibert home.
The Dutchmen added two more runs the following inning to cut Messiah's lead to six runs. Freshman
Derek Brousseau hit a double to center field and scored off a home run to left field by Greene. The home run was the first of Greene's collegiate career.
Messiah added two more runs in the seventh inning for the 11-3 victory.
Junior
Nate Blough started and pitched the first two innings. Classmate
Jake Becker pitched four innings, striking out two. Senior
Josh Muscalus and sophomore
Ian Younker split the duties in the ninth inning.
GAME TWO
The Falcons started the scoring in the second inning with three runs crossing home plate. A double to right by Dan Etter scored a run, while a triple to right center from Jon Shenk added another. Shenk then scored off a single to left by Sam Tajiri.
Messiah posted a run in the seventh with a triple from Shenk starting the inning and a single from John Brubaker scoring the run.
LVC's only run of the game came in the seventh inning. Rhody opened with a single to right field and a double to left center from Wiest advanced the runner. Deibert then tallied a sacrifice fly to center field to score Rhody. Messiah's starter, Eric Spring, forced a groundout and fly out to end the game.
Junior
Shane Specht pitched the complete game for LVC, tallying five strikeouts.
Lebanon Valley finished the 2010 campaign with a 22-14 overall record, and a 9-9 mark in Commonwealth Conference action.
