GAMBIER, Ohio - Lebanon Valley's Cinderella run to the NCAA Tournament came to end Friday as the men's tennis team fell to Mount Union, 5-0, in the first round at Kenyon College.
The Purple Raiders (21-4) were too much for the Dutchmen (12-8), sweeping doubles and winning in straight sets at Nos. 2 and 4 singles. The match was forced indoors due to weather.
Lebanon Valley, champions of the Commonwealth Conference, upset their way past the CC's top two seeds to win their title and earn the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. LVC was making their first-ever appearance on the national stage.
Grant Aronson and Zach Perry beat
Jon Gingrich and
Jared Zeigler, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles, and Brian Mogus and Travis Papay defeated
Matt Grodzinski and
Andrew Levin, 8-2, at No. 2. Alex Kearney and Brian Widdoes topped
Tom Neckelmann and
Brad Sweigart, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles to finish the sweep there.
In singles, Mogus earned a quick 6-1, 6-0 win over Zeigler at No. 2 before Aronson ended the match with a a 6-0, 7-5 effort against Sweigart at No. 4. The Raiders were up a set at Nos. 1 and 3 and leading in the first sets at Nos. 5 and 6 at match's end.
