CHESTER, Pa. - Lebanon Valley came back from 5-1 down to capture the rubber match of its weekend series with Widener, 7-5, in Chester on Sunday.
The Dutchmen (14-13-1, 5-1 CC) were buoyed by
Joe Soupik's three-run home run in the fifth and a decisive three-run seventh that included a two-run go-ahead double by
Bert Malloy.
The Pride (12-11-1, 3-3 CC) had taken the lead with a four-run fourth inning that included four doubles. Widener had a chance to tie or win the game in the ninth, but left the bases loaded to end the game.
Brian Miller (2-2) picked up the win with four innings of scoreless relief for starter
Nick Faria. Kevin Culbert left with the lead after five full innings for Widener, and Mike Pappas (3-1) suffered his first loss of the year by allowing three runs over the final four innings.
LVC scored first, going up 1-0 in the second when Malloy's single drove in
Dustin Deibert from second base. Widener answered in the third with Sean Saverio's fielder's choice to plate Tom DeAngelis, tying the game at 1-1.
The Pride broke the game open in the fourth, however, stringing together four doubled to score as many runs, including Alex Oliver's two-run shot down the line to cap the rally.
Soupik brought the Dutchmen back in the game in the fifth with his second homer of the weekend and sixth of the year, drilling a shot inside the right-field foul line to make it a 5-4 game.
LVC then worked into the lead in the decisive seventh inning, tying the game when
Aaron Mills pinch-hit and plated
Colt Zarilla, and going on top with Malloy's two-run double to left-center.
Miller and the LVC defense then held on for the win, getting out of trouble in the seventh with an inning-ending double play, and ending the ninth on a pop-up after getting into a bases-loaded jam.
LVC is scheduled to be at Delaware Valley College Monday.
