WEST LAWN, Pa. - Widener turned on the offense as it blew by Lebanon Valley, 16-2, in their opening game of the 2009 Commonwealth Conference Tournament at Owls Field.
The Pride (20-15-1) went ahead with a huge seven-run second inning, capped by Sean Saverio's grand slam, and continued to pile on the runs as starter Jason Ferrie allowed just five hits while striking out seven.
LVC will now take on Elizabethtown at 11 a.m. Friday in an elimination game, while Widener moves on to face Albright at 3 p.m. Earlier Thursday, Albright surprised top-seeded E-town with a 6-4 win.
Starter
Caleb Fick (1-2) went just two innings, and
Jake Becker allowed six more runs - just two earned - in three innings of relief.
Bobby Kinsman and
Ian Younker each three two innings to end the game.
LVC's defense committed six errors, including three in the fifth inning.
Widener jumped ahead with a string of hits in the second to take a 3-0 lead before loading the bases for Saverio, who drilled a shot down the right-field line to make it a 7-0 game.
Not content to sit on the lead, Widener piled on four more runs in the third keyed by Tom Mahoney's two-run single.
LVC ruined Ferrie's shutout in the fifth with
Colt Zarilla's RBI, and
Derek Helwig drove in Zarilla in the ninth for LVC's other run.
