Baseball Loses Thriller at Muhlenberg, 6-5

Box Score

ALLENTOWN, Pa.
- Muhlenberg negated a ninth-inning Lebanon Valley comeback with one of their own as the Mules won a walk-off thriller, 6-5, in non-conference play Wednesday.

The Dutchmen (4-6) went on top 5-4 with Joe Soupik's two-run homer in the top of the ninth, but the Mules (4-6) manufactured two runs in the final frame and won on Ed Risener's walk-off single.

The ending spoiled a solid outing by Shane Specht, who struck out five and allowed two runs on six hits in six innings of work. Nate Blough took the loss, going the final inning and a third and allowing two runs.

Phil Cresta threw eight innings for Muhlenberg and was on the hook for the loss before the comeback. Matthew Ordog picked up the win with an inning of relief.

Soupik had a big afternoon, knocking in four runs as he went 3-for-4 at the plate.

LVC put two on the board in the first when Soupik and Grant Wiest drove in back-to-back runs, but the Mules cut the lead in half on Christian Conti's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first.

The Dutchmen tacked on another run in the third with another Soupik base hit to score Brent Ruminski, but Muhlenberg again kept pace in the bottom of the inning when Eric Hammond scored after LVC tried to catch Conti in a rundown.

Muhlenberg broke the game late with a two-run seventh with base hits by Dan Fisher and Eric Pomroy to go up 4-3. The Mules took that lead into the ninth before LVC rallied.

Colt Zarilla led off with a double and Soupik went long to right, taking a 5-4 lead in the process. Wiest walked and moved to third on a sac bunt and a wild pitch, but Blough and Joe Kopchick both struck out to strand him.

In the last of the ninth, Hammond singled and Fisher doubled to start the rally before Pomroy hit a sac fly to plate Hammond. After Conti was intentionally put on, Risener singled to left center to win the game.

LVC will open up at home Thursday, hosting Frostburg State University at 3:30 p.m.
