Jill Moffatt Coaches the Next Generation of Ice Hockey Goaltenders

8/2/2024 11:15:00 AM

Jill Moffatt '20 posted a historic career in four seasons as the goaltender for the Lebanon Valley College women's ice hockey team, recording 4,444 saves to set the all-time NCAA record. While the former Dutchman goalie no longer competes, she remains involved with the sport as a coach.

Moffatt began coaching goalies in November 2022, when she started her business, "Grey Bruce Goaltending." The company is named after the two counties where she offers coaching services in southwestern Ontario, as she is originally from Owen Sound, Ontario. She coaches athletes aged 6-22, working with those learning the game and advanced players aspiring to compete at the collegiate level.

"I began this business after someone reached out multiple times asking if I would do some lessons with their daughter," Moffatt said. "Initially, I didn't bite at the idea. Then, I had the father of another child reach out for lessons. This was when I decided to take the first step and begin building GB Goaltending."

Moffatt has enjoyed transitioning to coaching, helping goaltenders reach the next level of their game. She said her favorite part of working with athletes is building connections and seeing them achieve success on the ice.

"I get goosebumps when a parent messages me to tell me about their kids' accomplishments," Moffatt said. "It is also rewarding when a child claims they 'can't' do something, and we figure it out together, and I see them look over at their parents with a big smile."

Moffatt brings several years of playing experience to her coaching role, including her record-setting collegiate career in which she earned two United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Goaltender of the Year honors and the UCHC Defensive Player of the Year award as a senior. She also competed professionally for two seasons in Sweden in the second-tier league HockeyAllsvenskan, spending a year with Björklöven before playing with Almtuna for a season.

While Moffatt has playing experience at the collegiate and professional levels, she said her years with Lebanon Valley greatly impacted the coach she is today. She said being a three-year captain for the Dutchmen particularly helped improve her leadership and communication skills.

"Being LVC's goaltender really helped me as a coach because I was challenged with balancing being a student and an athlete," Moffatt said. "Getting to practices, meetings, classes, and team lifts while also doing my best to stay healthy and keep up good grades taught me numerous organization skills."

Moffatt graduated from Lebanon Valley in 2020 with a bachelor's degree in Digital Communications with a concentration in Design. She uses the degree as a full-time marketing coordinator and graphic designer for a non-profit company. Moffatt said she was initially interested in the College because of its academic opportunities and the chance to be part of its inaugural women's ice hockey team.

"I chose LVC because of its strong educational programs and the ability to play college hockey," Moffatt said. "Something that made me eager to go to LVC was that my first year was also our hockey team's first-ever year as a program. I knew I would be a part of LVC history, and building traditions for the future was exciting. We started from nothing and got to make it our own."

Moffatt enjoyed competing for the Dutchmen and said head women's ice hockey coach Matt Yingst positively impacted her years at Lebanon Valley.

"I'd like to express my deep appreciation to Coach Yingst," Moffatt said. "There simply aren't enough words to convey my gratitude for everything he did for me during my time at LVC."

Four years after graduating, Moffatt still fondly remembers her experience at Lebanon Valley.

"I have so many favorite memories, like the bus rides to away games, hanging out in the locker room before and after practices and games, and the late-night study sessions with friends," Moffatt said. "If I could go back and do it all over again, I would."
