Jacquelyn McBride Finds Winning Formula for Athletics and Academics

7/12/2024 11:04:00 AM

Jacquelyn McBride '24 has excelled at Lebanon Valley College, achieving success on the court with the women's tennis program and in the classroom.

McBride finished competing in her third season for the Flying Dutchmen and has been one of the team's top performers during her time in Annville. She helped Lebanon Valley win the 2022 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth Championship while being named to the All-MAC Commonwealth First Team for her efforts. During the 2021-22 season, McBride posted a 14-8 singles record and a 19-2 doubles mark.

"I felt so honored to win the 2022 MAC Commonwealth Championship, especially after a heartbreaking loss the year prior," McBride said. "To secure this win, I saw my teammates step up to the challenge with determination and grit, and it meant the world to me to be surrounded by these girls. Receiving All-MAC Commonwealth First Team honors was icing on the cake. Being able to go to a school that encourages me to achieve my academic and athletic goals is a privilege."

McBride has also played an important role in LVC's excellent 2023-24 campaign that saw the team go 15-4. The senior said her primary objective was for the program to maintain its success as it transitions to a new conference.

"I had bigger goals this season, as the MAC Freedom includes a much tougher set of competitors," McBride said. "I hope I can be close to undefeated in singles and doubles matches. Playing on this side of the MAC will be difficult, but I am excited to play new teams. As a program, I know our goal is to dominate the bracket with the intent of a third run to the NCAA Tournament." McBride finished the year with a 15-4 record in singles play including a 4-1 record in conference play. In doubles, she was 15-3 and a perfect 6-0 in conference matches while helping lead LVC to the MAC Freedom semifinals.

While McBride has played an integral role in the accomplishments of Lebanon Valley's varsity women's tennis program, she has also worked to grow the sport on campus. The senior is a founder of the College's Tennis Club, a co-ed club open to all students regardless of their experience level.

An equally important focus for McBride is her academics, as she double majors in American Chemical Society (ACS) Chemistry and English. The senior is also a member of the College's Honors Program and Gamma Sigma Epsilon, the Chemistry honor society. Additionally, McBride received the College's John Bowman Allwein Scholarship, which provides students with full tuition for all four undergraduate years. Allwein Scholars are presented with three $2,500 stipends for research, travel, or study expenses associated with study abroad, internships, and/or collaborative research.

The scholarship has helped McBride travel to Connecticut and Virginia to conduct marine science and inorganic chemistry research over the past two summers. Along with these experiences, McBride worked at the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut for a week this winter, shadowing staff in seven departments.

"Even with my busy athletic schedule, I have found time to use my Allwein Scholarship to participate in several experiences beyond my normal academic coursework," McBride said. "All these experiences allowed me to expand my horizons and go on once-in-a-lifetime trips that I could have only dreamed about."

In addition to her responsibilities as a student-athlete, McBride is involved with multiple other clubs and organizations on campus. The senior gives tours to prospective students as a Valley Ambassador while serving as a Resident Assistant. She is also a Chemistry and Writing Peer Tutor, a First-year Experience (FYE) Writing Mentor, a chemistry lab Teaching Assistant, and a general chemistry Recitation Leader.

Following McBride's graduation in May, she looks forward to gaining experience in Chemistry and furthering her education in the subject. She recently accepted a job as an Associate Scientist at Eurofins.

"I plan to work for several years to gain hands-on chemical and/or pharmaceutical industrial experience before pursuing a doctoral degree in Chemistry," McBride said.
