MADISON, N.J. – The Lebanon Valley College men's tennis team completed the first day of the ITA Regional Championships with a strong showing against very good competition at Drew University.

Justin Schuetz and Adam Warren competed in the main singles draw and main doubles draw. In singles Schuetz was defeated 6-1, 6-3 by Harrison Maitland-Carter of TCNJ. Warren also drooped his match against a TCNJ opponent, Matt Michibata who won 6-1, 6-1. TCNJ was ranked 15th in the region at the end of last year.

Schuetz and Warren nearly pulled off what would have been the upset of the tournament in doubles as they battled RPI's top seeded doubles team to a very close match won by RPI 8-6. The Dutchmen also had two doubles team compete in pool play of the Doubles B draw. Jesse Beck and Michael Schuetz went 1-2 in Pool 5 while Brendan Byler and Jeffrey Bauer went 2-1 in Pool 6. Schuetz and Beck were defeated by a duo from Hamilton 7-5 in their first match and then dropped their second match 7-6 (7-5) to NJCU. They picked up a win in their third match 7-6 (7-1) over Drew. They qualified for the next round as a wild card with the win.

Bauer and Byler won their Pool and will be the fifth seed in the quarterfinals. The duo started with a 7-5 win over the team from Bard. They then dropped a hard-fought 7-5 decision to SUNY Oneonta before ending the day with a 6-0 win over Yeshiva to finish atop the group.

Competition will continue on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. at Drew. In case of rain the matches will all be moved indoors.
