WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College men's tennis team will have eight semifinalists competing for a conference title on Sunday after a strong first day at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre.
All three doubles teams entered won both of their matches on Saturday. At number one
Justin Schuetz and
Adam Warren were 8-1 winners over Albright in the.first round and then scored a 8-5 victory over York in the quarterfinals. They will face Messiah in the semifinals on Sunday morning.
Jeffrey Bauer and
Brendan Byler won 8-0 over Wilkes in the first round of number two doubles and then 8-1 over the team from King's in the quarterfinals to reach Sunday's semis where they will face FDU-Florham.
Michael Schuetz and
Jacob Erb received a first round bye and then defeated Arcadia at number three to move into the semifinals where they will face Albright who upset the second-seeded team from DeSales in the quarterfinals.
Justin Schuetz won his two number one singles matches facing familiar competition. His first round was a 6-3, 6-2 win over Luke Berger from Alvernia while his quarterfinal win was a marathon 6-7 (1), 6-4, 10-8 victory over Stevenson's Larry Johnson III. He will face Messiah's Chase Wilson in the semifinals on Sunday.
At number three singles
Jeffrey Bauer took down Michael Sell of Messiah 7-6 (6), 4-6, 10-3 in the first round before defeating Jayden Lewis from Alvernia 6-2, 7-5 to advance to Sunday's semis where he will face FDU-Florham's Matt Emery.
Brendan Byler was a 6-2, 6-4 winner in the first round of number four over Tommy Figurelli of Alvernia. He then swept Drew Fiedler of Wilkes 6-0, 6-0. On Sunday he will face Stevenson's Sathwik Madasi.
Michael Schuetz got a first round bye at number five and defeated Lycoming's Domanick Young 6-0, 6-0 to advance to Sunday where he will play Stevenson's Simeon Smith. Brain Ward is the final Dutchmen to advance to Sunday with a 6-0, 2-6, 10-4 victory over Quinn Carmody of FDU-Florham in the quarterfinals of number seven singles. He will face Messiah's Carl Anderson in the semifinals.
Sunday's semifinals and finals matches were canceled due to rain in the Wilkes-Barre area. The squad will be back in action on Wednesday when they host University of Scranton at the Shankroff Tennis Center at 4 p.m. in their first dual match of the fall season.
