ANNVILLE, Pa. – Members of the Lebanon Valley College community both past and present took part in the seventh annual Bob Kirkhoff Memorial Golf Outing on Saturday, Aug. 15 at the Fairview Golf Course
The annual tournament, held every year since 2009, saw 60 players take part in the event organized by Kirkhoff's wife Suzanne Hackman Morgan '77 with the assistance of Ed Vinarski '77 and Tom Sheaffer '75, including LVC alums spanning the years 1971 to 2011.
The late Bob Kirkhoff '77 was a two-sport athlete at LVC, captaining the football and baseball teams. In football, Kirkhoff played quarterback, with his best season coming in 1975 as he was named All-MAC after leading LVC to a 6-3 record. He threw for 12 touchdowns that season.
On the diamond, Kirkhoff established himself as the ace of LVC's pitching staff, posting a 2.25 ERA as a junior and a 3.48 ERA as a senior, both best on the team.
"Bob was an avid golfer so the organizers felt there was no better way to honor his memory than to establish the Bob Kirkhoff Memorial Golf Outing," said Sheaffer. "The outing provides those who knew Bob at LVC the opportunity to get together to remember him through the many stories and events we shared during our days at LVC and since."
After graduating in 1977, Kirkhoff began working for Hauck Manufacturing in Cleona while earning his MBA from York College. He worked with Hauck for over 20 years before leaving to become a manufacturing operations consultant. In 2000 he became the general manager and vice president of Trola-Dyne, Inc., a manufacturing company in York.
Kirkhoff married Suzanne Hackman '77, M'98, and they had two daughters: Ely '11 and Laine. He served the local community as a coach and president of the Hershey Youth Soccer Association. He passed away in the summer of 2008 and was inducted into the Lebanon Valley College Athletic Hall of Fame that same year.
One of the goals of the outing is to collect donations for causes supported by Kirkhoff as well as for agencies that assisted him while battling cancer. Participants are encouraged each year to donate to organizations or causes designated by the organizers. This year's beneficiaries include the LVC Blue and White Club, the Kirkhoff/Morgan Memorial Scholarship, and a walk for Parkinson's disease.
The tentative date for the eighth annual Bob Kirkhoff Memorial Golf Outing is set for Aug. 13, 2016. A living memorial dedicated to Kirkhoff, an oak tree marked by a plaque engraved with his name, is planted near the 15th hole tee box.
