GRANTHAM, Pa. - Messiah edged out Lebanon Valley 5-4 in the completion of their halted match on Thursday.
The match was a continuation of the originally-schedule date halted on April 7 due to darkness, with only Nos. 2 and 4 singles remaining to be played.
Brittany Dierwechter earned the win at No. 4 with a three-set victory over Sydney Schandel, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4, but Messiah clinched at No. 2 with Kelly Hopkins' win over
Lori Noble 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
The result throws a wrench into the top of the Commonwealth Conference standings, with LVC, Messiah, and Alvernia all tied at 4-1 in CC play with a match left to play. Should the three all win on Saturday and finish at 5-1, the Dutchmen would clinch the #1 seed by virtue of a tiebreak. LVC would also earn the #1 if they win and Messiah or both Messiah and Alvernia lose. The Dutchmen host Stevenson on Saturday in the regular-season finale.
LVC (10-7, 4-1 CC) picked up points elsewhere thanks to
Nicole Kracum at No. 3 6-2, 6-3 and
Marla Scacchitti at No. 5 7-6 (5), 6-4; LVC also picked up a doubles point at No. 3 thanks to Noble and
Alyssa Potosnak, who won 8-5.
