How It HappenedA five-goal second period propelled No. 11 Lebanon Valley to an 8-2 victory over West Chester on Friday night at Hersheypark Arena. The Dutchmen improved their record to 10-2-0-0, 6-2-0-0 ESCHL and have now won nine consecutive games, while the Golden Rams fell to 6-8-0-0, 1-8-0-0 ESCHL.
It was a bit of a rough start for LVC as West Chester's James Davis scored the game's first goal seven and a half minutes into the game. The Dutchmen's slow start ceased when
Bryan Hovanec scored his 15th goal of the season, a power play tally, to even the contest at 1-1 with just over four minutes left in the first. That score held up after 20 minutes of action and the two squads went into intermission tied at 1-1.
LVC exploded in the second period and scored five goals. Hovanec netted his team-leading 16th of season just over a minute into the period and Zack McKown scored off assists from
PJ Hefferin and
Ryan Maraldo to make it 3-1 Dutchmen. After
Andy Thurby made it 4-1, the senior scored again to make it 5-1 and
Travis Acker scored 16 seconds later to extend the lead to 6-1 heading into the final intermission.
In the third period, LVC scored early again, as
Jake Thomas found the back of the net with assists from Acker and Thurby to make it 7-1 contest. The Golden Rams' Joseph Opdenaker later scored, but
Matt McGinley added another goal with just over five minutes left for good measure to make the score 8-2.
Inside the Numbers/Stars of the Game - Hefferin finished with an assist and garnered third-star of the game honors, while Hovanec's two goals were good enough for him to be named the game's second star. Thurby totaled two goals and an assist and was tonight's star of the game.
- Acker had a goal and added two assists, while J. Thomas and McKown each added a goal and an assist.
- Making his fourth start of the year between the pipes,
Chase Wilson earned his third victory and made 16 saves on the evening.
