Miller Nets Goal for Men’s Ice Hockey in Season Finale at Alvernia

READING, Pa. ­­– Dylan Miller netted a goal in the third period for the Lebanon Valley College men's ice hockey team in its final game of the season, as the program battled tough while dropping a 2-1 decision in overtime to Alvernia University on Friday, Feb. 20 at Body Zone. 

The Golden Wolves (15-10-0, 13-8-0 MAC) were aggressive offensively early in the first period, but goaltender Chris Branch answered with six saves for the Dutchmen (8-14-3, 8-10-3 MAC) during the first 2:38 of the contest. Lebanon Valley then created a scoring chance at the 5:53 mark, as Reece McDonald put a shot on target that was saved. Alvernia followed this with more shots, but Branch came through with six stops for LVC over the next 4:58. 

The Flying Dutchmen kept sending the puck toward the net as the first frame progressed, as Garret Jackson took a shot that was saved at the 11:10 mark and Lukas Washco had an attempt saved at the 13:23 mark. Back on the defensive end, Branch made another save 13:40 into the first, before registering a pair of stops for LVC within three seconds in the 15th minute. Valley countered with a shot on goal by Jack Foote, which was saved at the 15:51 mark. Later in the period, penalties were charged to both teams, prompting the teams to play 4-on-4 hockey for two minutes. During this stretch, Branch made two saves, and Cameron Croteau put a shot on target for the Dutchmen. 

The Golden Wolves opened the scoring 2:33 into the second period, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by Sawyer Senio. The programs proceeded to go back and forth over the next 5:13, as each squad took one shot that was saved over this stretch. Owen Ames logged an attempt for Lebanon Valley during this span, at the 7:46 mark during a power play. 

Branch followed this by recording eight saves for the Flying Dutchmen during the next 4:52, including a stop while the opposition was short-handed. Lebanon Valley kept working to generate offensive opportunities as the second period progressed, as Anton Petrovskiy and Cade Helmer each took a shot that was saved within 15 seconds in the 14th minute. The squads then battled defensively during the rest of the frame, as Branch made two saves while John King took a shot for the Dutchmen that was saved.

Lebanon Valley tallied the first shot of the third period, as Jesse Shogan had an attempt saved 1:45 into the frame. Alvernia then put eight shots on goal over the next 6:23, and Branch delivered a save for the Flying Dutchmen on each try. The goaltender posted three of these stops during a successful penalty kill for LVC, which started in the seventh minute. The Dutchmen followed this with an offensive opportunity, as Tanner Tolliver took a shot that was saved at the 9:12 mark. The Golden Wolves also put three shots on target over the next 3:40, leading to three more saves by Branch.

Lebanon Valley got on the board 13:11 into the third period, tying the game at 1-1. The program evened the score when Miller netted a clutch goal, courtesy of an assist by Artem Kondrashov. The Flying Dutchmen also began a power play in the 14th minute, which prompted Jordan Stear to put a shot on goal that was saved at the 15:58 mark. Helmer and Max Kontir also each took a shot that was saved within nine seconds in the 17th minute. Alvernia then took the last shot of regulation at the 18:19 mark, which was saved by Branch. The programs remained tied at the end of the third frame, sending the contest into overtime. The Golden Wolves ended the period on a power play.

Alvernia had a 4-on-3 advantage during the first 48 seconds of the five-minute overtime, and Ian Lindberg recorded a block for Lebanon Valley during this stretch. The programs proceeded to go back and forth, as neither squad put a shot on target until there was less than a minute left. The Golden Wolves then scored on a goal by Leo Cabulis with 35 seconds remaining in overtime, winning the game 2-1.
