Volleyball Splits on Day One of Goucher Tournament

TOWSON, Md. – The Lebanon Valley volleyball team lost a tough, five-set match to begin the day, but rallied with a three-set win to finish it off in day one of the Goucher Tournament in Towson, Md. on Friday evening.

After dropping the first two sets, 25-23 apiece to Washington College in the opening match of the day, the Valley rallied with 27-25 and 25-23 wins in sets three and four. However, it wasn't meant to be in the fifth set as Washington took the set and the match, 15-7.

LVC featured four players with double-digit kills, as freshman Greta Weidemoyer led the way with 17 put-away's. Sophomore Alli Quirk and junior Kayla Confer picked up 12 kills apiece, while senior Megan Schoch added 10 kills. Additionally, Quirk's 12 kills came on just 27 attacks, hitting .407 for the match.

Junior Kacey Musselman picked up yet another double-double, tallying an impressive 49 assists coupled with 17 digs. Quirk added two block solos and three block assists at the net, while sophomore Allie Garrett led the way defensively with 31 digs.

In the nightcap, the Valley used the match as redemption, fighting to a straight-set victory over Kean, 25-23, 25-23, and 25-19.

"We played well enough to win," head coach Wayne Perry said. "Although it wasn't our best match defensively, we were able to keep the pressure on with a solid effort from the service line."

Confer was impressive beginning points, recording five aces in the match, while Musselman and senior Jess Finlayson each ripped off two aces each.

Offensively, Weidemoyer was the kill leader again with 12 kills on just 22 attempts, while Confer notched 10 kills on 19 attempts, and Quirk added five kills on 22 attempts.

At the net, Quirk and Weidemoyer each recorded one solo block and two assist blocks, respectively. Freshman Rachel Moltz picked up eight digs in the back line, while Finlayson added seven digs.

LVC continues its busy weekend tomorrow, taking on Goucher at 11 a.m. and Hollins at 1 p.m.
