HERSHEY, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley ice hockey team surrendered four unanswered goals and dropped a 5-4 decision to West Chester on Saturday afternoon at Hersheypark Arena.
Freshman
Justin Boyd opened the scoring in the seventh minute as sophomore
PJ Hefferin fed it to Boyd with just the goalie to beat. The rookie went backhand-forehand and beat the West Chester goalie high glove side for the 1-0 advantage.
Just four minutes later, classmate
Brennan Thompson got in on the action, finding the back of the net off a Horst rebound to push the lead to 2-0.
The Golden Rams lit the scoreboard in the 15th minute as a wraparound chance from West Chester's Ryan McMahon trickled through multiple people in front and beat LVC sophomore goaltender
Mitchell Doughty to cut the lead to 2-1, where it would stand through the end of the period.
Freshman Joey Labonte extended the LVC lead early in the second period as he threw a deflection past the West Chester goalie to push the score to 3-1. However, that's when West Chester went on its run as two goals from James McKee and tallies from Mike Kozza and James Davis put West Chester in front, 5-3, with 16 minutes to play.
Sophomore
Alexander Toppin sidestepped a defender and finished in the back of the net with just over 11 minutes to play, but the Dutchmen couldn't convert late and fell with a 5-4 final score.
Doughty made 27 saves on 32 shots for the loss, while West Chester's Randy Japchen posted 29 saves on 33 Dutchmen shots.
The Valley are back in action on Friday when they host Drexel inside Hersheypark Arena at 7 p.m.
